During May 2017, SfL undertook and or participated in the following activities:
1.0 INPUTS FOR NEW GV PROJECT DRAFT FOR CISU
The TA Education led the SfL team in providing inputs for the Education Thematic Area to the GV Secretariat during the drafting of the Proposal for the E4L Extension Application to CISU.
2.0 ADVOCACY MEETING ON CBE AND MOTHER TONGUE IN ACCRA
A meeting was convened by International NGOs (INGOs) working in Education and leading NGOs implementing the Ghana CBE Programme to discuss advocacy strategies to get the Government to take responsibility for implementing the Ghana CBE Policy. It was held in Accra in late May 2017. INGOs that participated in the meeting included Oxfam, Plan Ghana, Actionaid Ghana, and Care International. School for Life led a few CBE Alliance member organizations to the meeting.
The matters discussed at the meeting were the posture of the Minister for Education regarding Mother Tongue education and the CBE Programme, the readiness of the Government (MoE/GES) to take over CBE after cycle 5, the legal status of the CBE Policy, and grey areas in the CBE Policy.
How to position ourselves as Civil Society Organizations in the new paradigm of CBE implementation (Public-Private- Partnership)
At the end of the meeting it
was agreed that a meeting with the Minister of Education was very necessary but
there was a need to go through some insiders in the Government like the
Parliamentary Select Committee on Education and some allies. A technical committee was formed to study the
policy critically and a draft Ghana CBE Advocacy strategy and prepare for a
full meeting including heads of the NGOs to engage with the Government on the
Mother Tongue and CBE implementation issues.
3.0 RESPONSE TO REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS (RFP)
SfL submitted proposals to the CBE MU to implement CBE in 7 districts, four being districts where SfL is currently implementing CBE and three being Districts where SfL has implemented CBE before under DANIDA and EQUALL Project. The districts are Kumbungu, Saboba, Mion, Nanumba South, Nanumba North, Tolon and East Mamprusi.
SfL is optimistic that it would be granted contracts for at least the current four districts in which it is implementing the Ghana CBE Programme.
4.0 MEETING WITH TZEDEK COUNTRY DIRECTOR:
Even though the Education Quality Initiative Project (EQUIP) ended in July 2016, there is still the desire of Tzedek Board in UK to continue to work with SfL. A country Director of Tzedek is currently holding meetings with SfL to look at possible strategies that can be implemented in selected districts in the Northern Region towards helping to improve quality education.
Tzedek is at the moment working around the clock to source funding from donors to meet the above intentions.
